The 2 main processor manufacturers on the market for the average consumer are AMD and Intel. Both of these companies have great CPUs and one is not necessarily greater than the other. Intel is the giant of the processor world, think of it as Wal-Mart. It is not always the best place to go to shop, but rather, it is convenient and cheap. I would probably say that at least 3/4 of all businesses that sell computers sell more Intel-based computers yearly than AMD-based computers. The reason is very simple: Intel has much more money to buy advertising and can get their name farther around the world faster. Intel has one fatal flaw that could be the deciding factor if it comes to an all-out battle with AMD: the way they create their CPUs and research new processes. Intel Makes a big improvement at first without finding all of the bugs. They then go through and find the bugs after the CPUs have shipped and release new processors with the bugs fixed. On the other hand, AMD starts out small and gradually works their way up the ladder without bugs and last-minute fixes. With AMD's recent acquisition of ATI and their research on the code-named Fusion CPU, AMD has a chance to overtake Intel with the release of Vista. This new Fusion CPU combines both a GPU and a CPU in a single chip, thereby reducing power needs, heat and the need for an add-in graphics card. This will be extremely helpful to businesses who want to run Vista and do not wish to buy an expensive computer only to find out they need a high-end graphics card. So therefore, I believe that Intel and AMD will be around for a long time, but I'm rooting for AMD.
